# ChatGPT: Custom MCP Server

For normal setup, [install the published Mnemoverse Memory plugin](https://mnemoverse.com/docs/api/chatgpt). This page is for people deliberately creating their own MCP connection.

## Who can add the server

Custom-server creation depends on the ChatGPT account and workspace permissions. These are separate from installing a published plugin. Check the controls offered in your account and OpenAI's [custom MCP server guide](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/custom-mcp-server) and [help article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-connecting-custom-mcp-servers-in-chatgpt).

**Historical evidence, checked 21 October 2026:** OpenAI's help article described Business workspace creation as admin/owner-only, Enterprise/Edu creation as permission-controlled, and Pro connections as read/fetch. Its developer guide described read and write tools without specifying plans. Neither source named Plus, Free or Go. The help article described custom-server setup as web-only and said Developer Mode was no longer required. These observations are not a current availability guarantee and do not apply to the published plugin's installation.

## Add Mnemoverse as an app

The manual flow documented on 21 October 2026 was:

1. Open [ChatGPT Plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins), select **+**, then **Add custom MCP server**. If your account does not offer this, use the [published plugin](https://mnemoverse.com/docs/api/chatgpt) rather than creating a different setup by guesswork.
2. Name the server **Mnemoverse**. Under **Connection**, enter:

   ```text
   https://mcp.mnemoverse.com/mcp
   ```

3. Choose **OAuth** authentication. Select **Create as a plugin** when offered, complete Mnemoverse browser sign-in and review the requested access. Do not paste an API key into the conversation.
4. Review the discovered tools and install the custom plugin. In a workspace's older form, **Scan Tools** may start the sign-in before creation. See [tool availability](https://mnemoverse.com/docs/api/tool-availability) for the tools Mnemoverse offers to ChatGPT.
5. Start a new conversation, select the plugin, and call `memory_stats`. Test a user-requested write and read-back before relying on saving.

Sign-in and consent are required for authenticated memory calls. A tool list is not proof that those calls work. If the consent grants only read access, the connection cannot save memories; reconnect with the requested write access only if you want that capability.

## Updating an existing custom connection

Use the refresh/scan-tools control offered by the connection's settings. Workspace admins may need to manage a workspace-published connection. After refreshing, start a new conversation and verify the tools you intend to use. This is maintenance of a custom connection, not a requirement to install Mnemoverse from the public directory.

## Verification record

An existing Mnemoverse connector on ChatGPT Pro passed `memory_stats`, a write and a read on 27 September 2026. That check did not cover creating the connection or fresh sign-in, and does not establish today's plan eligibility. The published plugin has a [separate verification record](https://mnemoverse.com/docs/api/chatgpt#install-the-published-plugin).
